NHS Wales clinicians helped the Welsh NHS Golf team to 2nd place in the 4 Nations finals with help from Flexicare Medical as their primary sponsor.
The competition, which was holding its 25th anniversary, is played between teams of NHS staff from Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. This years venue was Worsely Park Manchester on the 22nd and 24rd August.
The first round was delayed slightly owing to torrential rain, however once play got under way, the Welsh team really went for it. After the first days play, they were sitting 2nd to Ireland, and knew going into the 2nd days play that they had to produce something special to overhaul the Irish.
The 2nd day involved 36 holes, and after the first 18 holes the Welsh team had closed the gap on the Irish. Going into the final 18 holes, the Welsh knew that they had to outscore the Irish by 2 points per player to take the Trophy. However despite some excellent golf, they could not achieve this, eventually finishing 2nd, with the Scottish 3rd and England 4th.
Welsh Captain John Carden commented “This is the best result for some years for the Welsh team as we have always struggled to get a team together, however this year we decided to hold a qualifying event, which resulted in a much more competitive team. The team was represented by staff from all over Wales, and we had a great team atmosphere. We will definitely looking to go one better next year”, “The whole team would like to thank Flexicare for providing sponsorship to the team, and ensure that we looked professional in our Welsh team shirts.”
